WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) released the following statement after news that General Motors announced a $4 billion investment, which included a commitment to investing in the Lake Orion plant, supporting thousands of Michigan jobs.

“I represented Orion Assembly in Congress, I’ve walked the picket lines with the UAW workers there, and I secured federal funds to support the infrastructure around this plant. I know this plant, and I know how much it means for the Lake Orion community.

“Whenever any Big Three auto company invests billions of dollars and supports our auto industry and auto workers – that’s a good day for Michigan. And this announcement by General Motors solidifies that commitment to Michigan.”

Background on Slotkin and the Orion Assembly Plant:

In 2022, General Motors announced an investment of more than $7 billion in four Michigan manufacturing sites, including $4 billion for Orion Assembly. The investments announced in 2022 were expected to create 2,300 new jobs and protect 1,000 existing jobs at Orion Assembly, jobs that are on strong footing after yesterday’s announcement. The plant, which had produced the Chevy Bolt until the end of 2023, will produce full-size SUVs and light duty pickup trucks when it is reopened.

In 2019 Slotkin was in Lake Orion walking the picket line supporting UAW workers. In 2023 Slotkin secured $7 million in federal funding to help rehabilitate Giddings, Silverbell and Brown roads around the GM Orion Assembly plant while the auto manufacturer is expanding plant operations.
