Slotkin Statement After Voting Against Mullin Nomination for DHS Secretary

Mar 24, 2026 | Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last night, U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, voted against the nomination of U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) to be the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary.

“I voted against confirming Markwayne Mullin to be the next Secretary of Homeland Security.

“First, in both private and public, Senator Mullin has no plan for desperately-needed reforms of ICE. The American people — Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike — have lost confidence in ICE after watching federal law enforcement kill American citizens in the streets with their own eyes.

Second, the DHS Secretary plays a critical role in protecting America’s elections. Senator Mullin is still unable to clearly state who won the 2020 election. And he has notably left the door open to illegally using federal law enforcement to intimidate Americans at the polls, if President Trump follows through on his stated threats.

Michigan is a border state. We need a functioning DHS. And no matter who is in charge, I will work with them to deliver security to our state.”
