“If my Republican colleagues want my vote on that bill, they’re going to need to act like adults and come talk to me about it… If you want that vote, you’re going to have to talk to me about health care.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last night, Wednesday, September 17, 2025, U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) delivered a speech from the Senate floor making clear how President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” will strip away health care and drive-up costs for average Americans and working families.
Her speech emphasized how the consequences of the Big Beautiful Bill will impact Michiganders, with rate hikes this fall – including by using a real-life example of a Michigander, who has already received notice of a 15% increase from 2024 to 2025. The Senator drove home a critical message, that in the most powerful country in the world, families should not have to go bankrupt to get the care that they need, all to cut taxes for the wealthiest.

Key Excerpts:
- “We’re coming up on a big deadline. We all know that September 30 the government runs out of money. I don’t know a single person who wants a government shut down… But if my Republican colleagues want my vote on that bill, they’re going to need to act like adults and come talk to me about it… If you want that vote, you’re going to have to talk to me about health care.”
- “They’re starting to send out letters, like this one I have in front of me. This was sent to a man in Macomb County. His letter said last year the cost of his healthcare was almost 37,000, and starting January 1 it’s 43,000. That’s happening across the state of Michigan already.”
- “If you thought the Big Beautiful Bill was cutting someone else’s healthcare… every single American is either at risk of losing health insurance or having the price of their health insurance, go up… we’re hearing stories about people who are going to get a 79% increase on their bill starting January 1st.”
- “When you get your letter, and you gasp at how the price has gone up on your private insurance, you understand exactly who gave you that price increase. Who put you in that position. That is Donald Trump that is my Republican colleagues across the aisle. That is everyone who said I’m going to do the political thing, instead of what’s right.”
